Journey of Self-Discovery: My iGENEA DNA Test Revelations about the Drury Surname

Family name Drury

In the quest for self-discovery, I recently had an iGENEA DNA test - an adventure that brought unexpected turns and myriad revelations. The surprises started with my surname - Drury, which revealed an intimate connection with not just the British Isles, but also a fascinating link with the Vikings from Scandinavia!

When I embarked on this journey of self-discovery through my iGENEA DNA test, I knew I was in for some revelations. However, the surprises that lay ahead exceeded my expectations. The test results confirmed a tie not just to my suspected Irish and British ancestry, but also unveiled unexpected connections to Scandinavian Vikings – a revelation that is still sinking in!

My surname, Drury, carries a rich history I was barely aware of. I knew about its Old French origins, meaning “Love” or “Friendship”, but it was surprising to learn of the wide dispersal of the Drury family across different countries. The DNA match showed relatives not just in Ireland and the UK, but also in distant places like the USA, Canada, and even Australia, painting a picture of widespread migration I was unaware of.

But the highlight was the introduction to a long-lost Viking lineage. As per the iGENEA genetic testing data, there is a significant probability that my Drury ancestors were not just Gaelic or British, but also Viking invaders from Scandinavia. This was supported by historical records showing Viking invasions in the British Isles during the ninth century, which aligns perfectly with the DNA evidence. The revelation has piqued my interest in learning more about my Viking ancestors and their daring exploits, a part of my heritage that I never knew existed.

The test also revealed an R1b haplogroup, typically associated with Western Europe, particularly the British Isles. The haplogroup data supports my Irish and British roots, reinforcing my connection with the Drury clan in these regions.

Unexpected turns the DNA test took have led me to dig deeper into my family's history, reaching out to distant relatives, and finding shared stories and experiences, creating a wholesome picture of the Drury family. Indeed, the surprises from my iGENEA DNA test were many, each taking me on a fresh discovery path and opening avenues to embrace a broader and more diverse heritage than I ever anticipated.
